Microsoft has released a preview version of the Group Policies for their newest Chromium-based Edge browser. Here is how to download them.

As you may already know, Microsoft Edge, the default web browser of Windows 10, is moving to a Chromium-compatible web engine in the Desktop version. Microsoft explains that the intention behind this move is to create better web compatibility for customers and less fragmentation for web developers. Microsoft has already made a number of contributions to the Chromium project, helping to port the project to Windows on ARM. The company promises to contribute more to the Chromium project.

Like many other Chromium-based browsers, the new Microsoft Edge browser includes support for the Group Policy. Microsoft has released a set of administrative templates that will allow administrators and advanced users to maintain certain browser features in a production environment pr locally.

As of now, the templates are available in English (US) only. Also, there are no templates included for updates, as Microsoft is about to release it separately for their enterprise customers.

The templates come with an HTML file which provides brief descriptions for available options.The ZIP archive includes the ADMX file, an English (US) version of the ADML file, and an English (US) HTML doc with the list of policies and descriptions.Clicking on the policy name will lead you to a page with the policy option details.

How to install Group Policy Administrative Templates for Microsoft Edge

Note: You need to be running Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education edition to use the Local Group Policy Editor app (gpedit.msc) for adding templates.

To install Group Policy Administrative Templates for Microsoft Edge, do the following.

Download the templates.
Unpack the files to any folder you want.
Press Win + R keys together on your keyboard and type gpedit.msc.
Under Computer Configuration on the left, right-click the Administrative templates item.
In the Add/Remove Templates dialog, click on the Add button.
Browse from the file windowsadmen-USmsedge.adm. and click on Open.
In the Add/Remove Templates dialog, click on Close.
Expand the Group Policy options to Computer ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesClassic Administrative Templates (ADM)Microsoft Edge.

The administrative templates add the changes under the following Registry branch:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge

Let’s see how to download Microsoft Edge ADMX Group Policy Templates. You can use edge administrative templates to configure policy settings for Microsoft Edge and manage Microsoft Edge updates on all versions of Windows.

Microsoft Edge Administrative Templates files are divided into .admx files and language-specific .adml files. To configure Microsoft Edge with group policy objects, install administrative templates that add rules and settings for Microsoft Edge to the group policy Central Store in your Active Directory domain.

You can use Local Group Policy Editor on the target computer to configure policies on individual computers. This approach lets you apply policy settings that only affect the local device. There are two administrative templates for Microsoft Edge, and both can be applied with common group policy management tools such as Local Group Policy Editor for application on an individual computer or the Group Policy Management Console for Microsoft Windows domain networks. Microsoft Edge supports mandatory and recommended policies. Mandatory policies override user preferences and prevent the user from the policy. Recommended policies provide a default setting that the user can override.

Careful – Legacy Microsoft Edge Group Policies

You need to be careful with the Microsoft Edge Group Policy settings. All the Windows 10/11 devices will have a default set of policies for Microsoft Edge, but those policies are for the legacy Edge browser (NON-Chromium) version.

If you want to configure Microsoft Edge policy settings, The following steps guide you to download and install the Microsoft Edge administrative template –

You can download the latest build and version of ADMX Templates for Microsoft Edge from the Microsoft download center https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/business/download.

On the edge of the business download page, select the channel/version, build and platform and then click on GET POLICY FILES.

To download the Microsoft Edge Policy file, click Accept and Download.

The file will automatically be started downloading MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates.cab. Double-click the cab file and copy MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates.zip file to a folder.

The next step is to extract the contents of MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates.zip to a folder. Open the extracted folder “MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplateswindowsadmx”

Add Microsoft Edge Administrative Template to Local Group Policy

You can use Local Group Policy Editor on the target computer to configure policies on individual computers. This approach lets you apply policy settings that only affect the local device.

You must install Microsoft Edge ADMX settings into Windows 10 or Windows 11 devices if you are using Local Policies.

After you extract the templates, open MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplateswindowsadmx. Copy msedgeupdate.admx and msedge.admx files to “%systemroot%PolicyDefinitions“.

Here you see the admx files has copied to the local client machine in source location C:WindowsPolicyDefinitions folder.

Copy MS Edge ADML Files to Local Repository

Once you have copied the ADMX file, you have to copy the ADML files. In the admx folder, open the appropriate language folder. For example, open the en-US folder if you’re in the U.S.

NOTE! – Copy all the language files as per your requirement. For example – If you want German and English ADMX support, you must copy 4 files. 2 German Language files and 2 US English language files.

When you add the administrative template files to the appropriate location, Microsoft Edge policy settings are immediately available in the Local Group Policy Editor.

To confirm the files loaded correctly, open Local Group Policy Editor directly (Windows key + R and enter gpedit.msc) or open MMC and load the Local Group Policy Editor snap-in.

Missing Edge ADMX Policy in Group Policy Management Editor on Domain Controller

You might be noticed that the newly added edge admx files are only available for local group policy. It is not visible in Group Policy Management Editor on Domain controller.

Since we have added the files to the local machines, The policy appears in the local group policy editor. To make visible the policy files in a domain environment, use the center store to replicate Windows-based policy files.

Add Microsoft Edge Administrative Template to Active Directory

To take advantage of the benefits of .admx files, you must create a Central Store in the sysvol folder on a Windows domain controller. The Central Store is a file location checked by the Group Policy tools by default.

The Group Policy tools use all .admx files in the Central Store. The files in the Central Store are replicated to all domain controllers in the domain.

You can now copy the Microsoft Edge ADMX and ADML files to the central policy store location on your domain controller. The following is the central store path for the HTMD lab environment – Admemcmsysvolmemcm.comPolicies.

Here you need to copy the admx files has copied to the PolicyDefinitions folder on the domain controller from the source location.

Also, Copy the “msedge.adml” and “msedgeupdate.adml” files to the matching language folder in the PolicyDefinition folder to SYSVOL central policy store.

Create a Group Policy for Microsoft Edge in Domain Controller

To complete this procedure, you must be a member of the Domain Administrators group, or otherwise be delegated permissions to create new GPOs.

Open Group Policy Management console. In the navigation pane, expand Forest:YourForestName, expand Domains, expand YourDomainName, and then click Group Policy Objects and then click New.

Specify the name for your new GPO that indicates the purpose of the GPO. For Example – MS Edge Group Policies and click OK.

In the group policy management editor, navigate to Computer ConfigurationPoliciesAdministrative Templates.

You have the following policies to manage Microsoft Edge browser settings.

Microsoft Edge – Configure the mandatory policies for your Edge browser.
Microsoft Edge – Default Settings (users can override) – Configure recommended policy for Microsoft Edge.
MS Edge Update – Contains the policy settings to configure how Microsoft Edge installs the updates.

Note – If both versions of a policy are set, the mandatory setting takes precedence. A recommended policy only takes effect when the user hasn’t modified the setting.

After downloading the new Microsoft Edge, download the correlating Group Policy template for Edge as well. As a note on the download page, support ends for legacy Edge on March 9, 2021.

Manage New Microsoft Edge Chromium with Group Policy

As you can see below, on a Windows Server 2019 server, I have installed the new Microsoft Edge Chromium and have downloaded the MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplate.cab file.

In this walkthrough, I will be extracting the Group Policy template files locally and controlling them locally as opposed to Domain-wide group policy. There are a couple of extraction steps to carry out once the .cab file is downloaded. Extract the .zip file from the cab file.

Next, you will need to extract the contents of the .zip file.

Copy the msedge.admx file from the microsoft edge policy template files

Paste this file in the c:windowspolicydefinitions folder.

Paste the msedge.adml and msedgeupdate.adml files into the c:windowspolicydefinitionsen-US folder.

After copying and pasting the files around, you should be able to open your local Group Policy editor and see the new Microsoft Edge Group Policy settings.

Microsoft Edge supports what Microsoft refers to as both mandatory and recommended policies. Mandatory policies override user preferences , while recommended policy settings provide default setting that may be overridden by the user. Most policies are mandatory only. There is a small subset that are mandatory and recommended. If both settings of a policy are set, the mandatory setting takes precedence.

Basic Microsoft Edge Chromium Group Policy settings

Let’s take a look at basic Group Policy settings that provide basic settings and functionality for controlling the new Edge. Below, are a few of the policy settings that help to squash some of the “first run” and synchronize type dialog boxes you see when launching the new Microsoft Edge Chromium on the first launch.

Most of the settings to note are in the root Microsoft Edge folder in Group Policy. The first setting is the Hide the first run experience and splash screen.

The Configure Internet Explorer integration is a way to use what is called IE Mode in Microsoft Edge. What is IE Mode? In the About IE Mode document found here, Microsoft describes it this way.

E mode on Microsoft Edge makes it easy to use all of the sites your organization needs in a single browser. It uses the integrated Chromium engine for modern sites, and it uses the Trident MSHTML engine from Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) for legacy sites.

Another “first run” type message you get is if you want to synchronize your settings and services. You can turn this off with the below policy setting:

You can control other behaviors such as the pop-up blocker using the settings under Content Settings. You see the settings such as:

Adding New Microsoft Edge Chromium Group Policy Template to Active Directory domain

Another approach to adding the new Microsoft Edge Chromium Group Policy template files is to add these at the domain level. The steps to do that are very similar to the ones shown above on an individual host, except the files are copied to a domain controller as follows:

On a domain controller or workstation with RSAT, browse to the PolicyDefinition folder. This is known as the “Central Store” on any domain controller for your domain. For older versions of Windows Server, you may need to create the PolicyDefinition folder.
Open MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates that you downloaded and go to windows > admx.
Copy the msedge.admx file to the PolicyDefinition folder.
In the admx folder, open the appropriate language folder. For example, if you’re in the U.S., open the en-US folder.
Copy the msedge.adml file to the matching language folder in the PolicyDefinition folder. Create the folder if it does not already exist.
With multiple domain controllers, the new ADMX files are replicated to using Active Directory replication.
To confirm the files loaded correctly, open the Group Policy Management Editor from Windows Administrative Tools and expand Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge. You will see the new Microsoft Edge node entries appear.

Wrapping Up

The Group Policy Template download for Microsoft Edge makes it easy to Manage New Microsoft Edge Chromium with Group Policy. This allows importing the readily available template files and configuring settings to control the behavior of the new Microsoft Edge Chromium.

Under the “Policy File” section, click the Download button.
Select the version of Microsoft Edge. (Usually, you want to use the latest stable version available.)
Select the build (latest version available).
Select the platform. For example, Windows 64-bit.
Click the Get policy files option.

Double-click to open the MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates.zip file.
Click the Extract all button from the “Compressed Folder Tools” tab.

Check the Show extracted files when complete option.

Usually, you’ll see three different sections after installing the templates, including Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Edge – Default Settings, and Microsoft Edge Update. The Microsoft Edge folder includes the mandatory policies that users cannot modify. The Microsoft Edge – Default Settings folder houses the recommended settings you can set as default, and the user can change to something different. And the Microsoft Edge Update folder has all the settings to manage updates for the browser, including the ability to disable update completely.

After making a policy change, you can confirm the policy by browsing to the edge://policy page to see all the policies that have been applied to the browser.

We’re focusing this guide on Windows 10, but you can refer these steps for all supported versions of Windows. Also, these instructions are meant to add administrative templates on an individual computer, but if you’re using Active Directory and you need configure a fleet of devices, perhaps adding the templates through Active Directory is a more efficient approach.

Microsoft has released Group Policy Templates that support the new Microsoft Edge web browser based on Chromium. Group Policies are a great way to customize the behavior of an installed piece of software on Windows 11/10. It is mainly used by System Administrators to customize the configuration of computers.

It is worth noting that these Group Policy Templates are only available in English (US version) and are not final. They will continuously be updated and modified to the most optimal version as the release is generally available.

The package that you download will contain the Group Policies for both Windows 10 and macOS.Extract the folder called windows to your computer locally.

Select Add and navigate to the following path inside that extracted windows folder: windowsadmen-US

Close the Add/Remove Templates… dialog box.

3] Things one should know

Microsoft has made the following notes that they expect a user to know:

This is a work in progress. We are sharing this early draft with you for your feedback, but the list will change between now and our final release, with policies being added, removed or changed based on feedback.
The HTML file includes both Mac and Windows policies.
Policies for managing updates aren’t included; those will be in a separate administrative template file.
These are only in English (US). We are working on localizing the policy descriptions and documentation before our final release.

New Group Policy settings Microsoft Edge available

Microsoft now has a dedicated page where they will provide information about new features and non-security updates. In the latest update, there are new sixteen policies that have been added to Microsoft Edge Stable Channel. IT admins or Admin users can manually download Group Policy settings for Edge (Chromium) and merge them with existing policies.

To download the updated Administrative Templates, you will have to go to the Microsoft Edge Enterprise landing page. There you can select the channel or build, platform, and click on Get Policy Files link. The link is next to the download button, which will download the Edge browser. Make sure to click on the link next to it to download Group Policy Settings Edge.

It will download a CAB file that needs to extract in the policy folder or Copy the msedge.admx file to the PolicyDefinition folder.

Example: %systemroot%sysvoldomainpoliciesPolicyDefinitions.

Or you can use the Group Policy Editor to import the Microsoft Edge templates.

PersonalizationReportingEnabled – Allow personalization of ads, search, and news by sending browsing history to Microsoft.
PinningWizardAllowed – Allow Pin to taskbar wizard.
SmartScreenPuaEnabled – Configure Microsoft Defender SmartScreen to block potentially unwanted apps.
TotalMemoryLimitMb – Set limit on megabytes of memory a single Microsoft Edge instance can use.
WebAppInstallForceList – Configure a list of force-installed Web Apps.
WebComponentsV0Enabled – Re-enable Web Components v0 API until M84.
WebRtcLocalIpsAllowedUrls – Manage exposure of local IP addresses by WebRTC.

Some of these policies are very interesting

DNSInterceptionChecksEnabled: It can be used to disable DNS interception checks. These checks attempt to discover whether the browser is behind a proxy that redirects unknown hostnames.
